First, Some Background.....
I work with a limited number of clients in my practice in flexible engagements. A small number of clients allows me to keep up with each person and manage the continuity important to creating a great coaching relationship. (Yes, you would be surprised by how much I think about my clients in between sessions!)
About You
You value connection and really appreciate someone who takes the time to get to know you. You are a creative CEO, Founder, entrepreneur, artist or executive leader (seated, or in transition). You are looking to find the meaning and connection in what you do, and develop the tools and guidance to improve and execute on your leadership and aspirations.
I have thought long and hard about who benefits the most from Surf Life based on my skills, philosophy and approach. I’ve found that the clients I work best with have some of the following attributes:
I have thought long and hard about who benefits the most from Surf Life based on my skills, philosophy and approach. I’ve found that the clients I work best with have some of the following attributes:
1. You want an authentic experience.
You are not looking for a one-size-fits-all type of experience. You value working with someone from a diverse and varied background, someone who has attempted things ranging from designing warm water sports gear, to being an internationally competitive athlete to starting a successful nonprofit organization, global culture change movement and business. You appreciate quirkiness and humor, a bit of humility and a great deal of empathy. No fancy offices or sleek cars here. I do not try to pretend to be someone I am not. I value connection and experiences and have an extensive background in the things I am passionate about, from art, traveling, and surfing to social entrepreneurship, leadership and innovation. You are looking for a trusted, rigorously trained coaching professional who will know when to hold you dearly in our space and listen, and who will know when you need a swift kick in the pants. You are open and ready for this.
2. You are driven by something other than money and status.
This is not to say you don’t have an appreciation for the finer things in life - aesthetics, art, design and luxury – these may very well be important to you. What I mean is you understand that there is more to life than getting ahead, rising to the top, or making your next million in business. That’s not what you are after, and that is not what has driven your success to date. You long to connect with something of deeper meaning in what you do, no matter where you are in your path, and to get clear on your values and purpose. You care about the world and doing your part to be socially responsible. You may not be fully connected with your impact, but that is one of the things you hope to explore through coaching. You may be clear on your intended impact, but are not sure how to make it a reality.
If you are just looking to figure out how you can go from Director to a C-suite position, then Surf Life is not for you. Rather, you are driven by having a fulfilling, balanced, authentic life headed towards a trajectory that honors your values and who you are at the core. You want something that enables you to provide well for yourself and your loved ones, and you want to do your work with joy and meaning.

3. You value empathy.
You are seeking connection and the feeling of being heard – truly heard - in a calm and supportive space. You know and understand that empathetic listening is helpful, and may even have worked with a therapist or healer in the past and are open to right-brained processes. The skeptic in you may sometimes question whether this is worth it, and may need an explanation as to why you are doing something. You, therefore, may be interested in the workings of the brain, and appreciate when you learn something new about how we think. Neuroscience education and integration is a hallmark of the way I work with clients, and I try to infuse this into everything I do with you.
4. You are ready to change.
You are coming to this coaching practice when you know you are really ready for a change AND you are willing to put in the time and work needed for true transformative change to occur. You are not ready to rely on others for answers and a way forward, but are ready for a real partner to help you think things through, get clear on your path forward, and push you toward your goals and toward discovering the brilliance that is already within you. You are on the path to change that will make you happier in life, whether it be a different way of operating in your business, finding a different calling, or completely transforming your leadership.
You are not of the mindset that allows you to make excuses for your lack of progress. You may feel a little scared, but beneath that is a determination that you are eager to connect with. I will really stand behind you and really believe in you, to the point where I will risk your firing me if it means telling you the real truth of what I see and the truth that may be hard to hear. I will be that person.

5. You love nature.
If you are local to the San Francisco Bay Area, you are open to curated coaching experiences in nature, overlooking the bluffs of Half Moon Bay, coaching underneath the Golden Gate Bridge at Cavallo Point or playing in the surf in Bolinas. You appreciate that our sessions may be a combination of in-person meetings honoring elements of nature, combined with visits to your office or phone calls. Conventional meetings bore you, so you are open to moving into environments in which both your body and brain can be activated.
If you are remote, you are open to exploring the relationship virtually, and may be willing to fly out to meet in person for our one-day discovery.

6. You trust your instincts.
If you feel in your gut a deep resonance with me, I may be the right coach for you. You trust your gut on this. I do not agree to take on clients whom I don’t really believe I can help. I have learned this the hard way, and if it’s not a fit, it’s not a fit. I won’t strong-arm or “sell” you into coaching with me. We both have to feel that it will work. You may be a little nervous making the investment in yourself, but you feel deep inside that this is one of the best things you could do for yourself.
If the above resonates with you, I encourage you to apply for a complimentary 45-minute introductory session. Of course, my best advice is to always go with your gut!
